For the past few years, my sister has been touting something called “The Paleo Diet” which basically consists of meat, vegetables, small amounts of fresh fruits, roots, and nuts. We obviously disagree on the meat part since her diet is high in meat and mine is free of it (she often jokes that our diets are the same “except for the meat part”). However, recently I’m beginning to think that our views may not be so different after all. Gary Taubes’ book “Good Calories Bad Calories” has had a big impact on my sister. This book is based on the idea that what makes us fat is neither fat itself nor excess calories, but rather excess of refined sugars (white four, sugar, and easily digested starches) and their effect on our insulin- the hormone which apparently regulates fat accumulation.
